June and Stan have been so busy getting ready for their first really big trip, they haven’t had the chance to make any short RV excursions.
Their “big” trip is taking a journey from Fort Kent, Maine, the beginning of Rt. 1, along the Eastern seaboard all the way to the end of Rt. 1 inKey West, Florida. They have been getting all kinds of information from the “intranet.”
June tells Stan, “I think we finally have all the information we need for our trip.” Stan answers, “I think so too, but we will probably learn stuff along the way.” Little do they know, but they will learn a lotalong the way.
They decide to have the kids and grandchildren over for dinner the night before they leave. Mark and Shannon, Will and Eve are so excited for June and Stan to be embarking on this exciting adventure. At dinner, Will tells his grandparents that they should go to Madawaska, Maine which is about 20 miles north of FortKent. He asks them, “Do you know that Madawaska is the most northeastern point and one of the four corners of the United States? Does anyone here know the other three corners?” Shannon pipes up and says, "I know Key West, Florida is the Southern most point of the US." “Will says, Mom you’re right! Well, the other two corners are San Ysidro, California and Blaine, Washington.” June and Stan just beamed, they are so proud of their smart grandson.
The next morning June and Stan pull out of Lackawanna, NY heading about 750 miles northeast to the beginning of their journey. On the way, they talk about things they want to do when they get to Maine. June says, “I want to stop at the Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce.” They had a lot on their website about the history of the area and things to do.” Stan replies, “Sounds good to me. Did the site say anything about fishing up there?” “June answers, “Yes, fishing, boating, hiking, antiquing they have it all! The best part is we are getting there when the fall foliage is at its prime. I know we have beautiful trees at home, but I’ve heard New England is the best.”
“Let’s go as far as New Hampshire today, says June. I’ve been checking out the travel brochure and Exeter sounds like an interesting village. Let’s set up camp there. “Stan replies, “anything you say dear, you’re the “travel guide.” They decide on Exeter Elms Family Riverside Campground.
As they drive up to New Hampshire, they are surprised at the beautiful scenery along the NY State Thruway. They agree that people need to see the “other New York” to really appreciate what the state has to offer (not just skyscrapers).
They pull into the Exeter Elms about 4 PM. Stan giggles after they check into their site, “June, these people sure do talk funny, they don’t sound anything like the Lackawannians I’m used to.” June scolds Stan, “Shame on you for making fun of that girl in the office. You’re going to have to open your mind up a little as we travel around the US of A. People are going to sound different and have other ways of doing things. Now let’s get everything hooked up so we can cook our dinner.
Stan and June set about hooking everything up. They were putting the black water hose into the hookup when for some reason unknown to them; it let loose covering them in waste. June screamed, “There has to be something we can use to keep this from happening again!! This is gross.”
